On the afternoon of 9 October 2012, Malala Yousafzai boarded her school bus in the northwest Pakistani district of Swat. A gunman asked for her by name, then pointed a pistol at her and fired three shots. She was 15 years old. One bullet hit the left side of Yousafzai's forehead, traveled under her skin through the length of her face, and then went into her shoulder. Two other teenagers on the bus were also shot, one in the arm and the other in the hand. Malala had been targeted for demanding that girls be allowed to receive an education. In 2014, Malala Yousafzai was jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize with Indian child rights activist Kailash Satyarthi. The Norwegian Academy awarded them the prize "for their struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education" At the age of 17, Malala became the youngest person to ever win a Nobel Prize. Malala is an advocate for the education of girls around the world. The members of the Girls Learn International Club at the Sharon High School share that passion. Proceeds from the screening of this film will benefit the Zabuli Center, a girls' school in Deh Subz, Afghanistan. Members of the GLI Club, both at the High School and at the Sharon Middle School, have developed a close and personal relationship with the students in Afghanistan through skype sessions over the past 7 years. This GLI Movie Night is being sponsored by The Rotary Club of Sharon Chariable Fund, Inc. All proceeds go to The Zabuli Education Center. |
